Ow the Edge

Ow the edge is an online catchphrase, that is dropped whenever a post or user is seen as edgy.

The phrase often appears in relation to Shadow the Hedgehog, on Expand Dong style photoshop edits, which resemble the style of a ransom note, having cut out letters and words from their original context.

The game, titled Shadow the Hedgehog was released in North America on November 15^th, 2005.

It was this game’s cover, that was first edited and uploaded to 4chan’s /v/ board, revolving around video games.

The game’s cover was edited by blocking parts of the title, so that the only legible words were “ow the edge”.

The image was uploaded to 4chan on September 22^nd, 2012.

The catchphrase would then be used on the message board as a response to edgy users, as well as a new reference to the Shadow the Hedgehog video game.

Following 2013, a new Expand Dong format photoshop edit started to be used on 4chan.
