The “doomer” is defined by being a disillusioned, depressed male in his early 20’s, associated with addiction, drug use and poverty.
“Doomer” is a character archetype, that is related to by most people in their 20’s, many of whom share the grim outlook on their future of endless consumption.
The meme has its own variations, which include Doomer Girl and Bloomer.
Its archetypical antithesis is the 30-Year-Old Boomer.

An early post, describing the character was uploaded to 4chan’s /biz/ board on September 16th, 2018.
The description contains characteristics such as “ashamed to speak to family”; “no hope of career advancement” and “lost youth”, creating the foundations of the hopeless archetype, many relate to today.

“Doomer” spread quickly on 4chan, appearing on a number of different boards within days, as well as being referenced in a number of other posts.
The popularity of the meme grew significantly in 2019, as “doomer” would spawn variations, like Bloomer, Doomer Girl and 23-Year-Old Go-Getter.
These memes would appear in comics, image macros, as well as animations on sites including 4chan, Reddit, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and Twitter.
