Urban Dictionary definitions would emerge starting in 2008, as people expressed their disapproval toward the phrase.
“He went to Jared” would start seeing use on image macro memes in 2011, mainly on sites like 9GAG, Reddit and me.me.
The most popular image macros to use the phrase as captions were the ones depicting characters from The Lord of the Rings.
