Avengers: Infinity War premiered in the United States on April 23rd, 2018.

In one of the scenes, Thanos (portrayed by Josh Brolin) is faced with having to kill Gamora (played by Zoe Saldana).

Before the anti-hero of the film executes the woman, he apologizes; “I’m sorry, little one.”

A screenshot of the scene was quickly adopted online, as an image macro.

“I’m sorry, little one” memes would start appearing as early as May 6th, 2018, in Facebook groups like 8shit.

Within days, the template would spread to the r/dankmemes sub of Reddit, after which it would emerge throughout the year on subs like r/memes and r/thanosdidnothingwrong.

By the summer of 2018, clips of the scene would start getting uploaded to YouTube by numerous users.
