The villain’s revelation was made in the DC Comic series, titled Flash: Rebirth which was published in six issues between April, 2009 and February, 2010.

“It was me, Barry” emerged on 4chan’s /co/ board as early as February 9th, 2010, with several posts with similar vein to follow throughout the years.

The meme first spread on to Reddit in December, 2014, first showing up on the r/FlashTV subreddit.

Voice over parodies started appearing online in 2020, with an early example having been uploaded to Twitter on June 14th, 2020, by @viewtifulval, using content from Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.

The genre quickly spread to YouTube where numerous parodies have been uploaded since June, 2020.
