What's the origin of Mom, Pick Me Up, I’m Scared?

While the exact origin of the meme is not known, a precursor can be found in the 2004 comedy Mean Girls (the movie which gave us Get In Loser, We’re Going Shopping).

In one of the scenes, we see a ginger teen in the middle of a Goat Rodeo, as he is on the phone, saying “Mom, can you pick me up? I’m scared.”

The scene was uploaded to YouTube on October 7th, 2011, by the channel Movieclips.

Image macros, featuring the phrase “Mom, pick me up, I’m scared” started appearing on Reddit in January 2019, with the most popular format being Patrick Star from Sponge Man Ice Cone in a purple sweater, captioned with the line.

By August 2019, the meme exploded in popularity as image macros and GIFs were rampant on the internet, especially on sites like Reddit, 9GAG, me.me and FunnyJunk.
