Monkey Puppet (or Awkward Look Monkey) is a meme template that is used to express feeling surprised or being embarrassed.

It is a reaction meme that features a wool-made monkey with a funny facial expression.ย  It is most often found in the forms of image macros or animated GIFs.

What's the origin of Monkey Puppet?

The monkey puppet was produced as a part of the Japanese TV series called Growing Children, which was made for entertaining little kids, between the 60s and the 80s.

As a meme, monkey puppet was first utilized in Spanish-speaking communities, because the show was also broadcasted in certain parts of South America.

Spread & Usage

How did Monkey Puppet spread?

In the Spanish-speaking communities the meme first started to spread under the name No Ahora Porfavor, meaning “not now, please”.

This early version of the meme also took advantage of the comical facial expression of the monkey puppet.

A YouTube video was uploaded in 2016 that showed an episode of the Growing Children series, showing the monkey puppet several times.

This video eventually was clipped and edited into both meme templates and animated GIFs.

Monkey Puppet became very popular on Tumblr and Reddit by the middle of 2019.
