The original remix of the scene was uploaded to the flash website Albino Blacksheep in 2005, by artist Erwin Beekveld. The video featured the remixed version of Legolas (portrayed by Orlando Bloom) uttering the line ‘They’re taking the hobbits to Isengard’, accompanied by upbeat music and various other scenes from the movie.
The meme initially spread on flash-sharing websites such as YTMND and Albino Blacksheep, starting from 2005. Dozens of remixes were created in the span of a few years, many of them eventually surfacing on YouTube.
Later YouTube became the primary surface for the distribution of various they’re taking the hobbits to Isengard memes, as well as live music adaptations and many other derivatives.
In 2013, Peter Jackson uploaded a video on his official YouTube channel that featured both the original video and a live Orlando Bloom performing the remix. The video gathered almost 10 million views since its upload.
