Online it is predominantly used as a reaction image macro, as well as a frequently used clip for YouTube remix videos.

The quote can be heard in the Season 2 Episode 25 of SpongeBob SquarePants, titled “Wormy”.

The episode depicts the two protagonists, SpongeBob and Patrick take care of a pet caterpillar, which breaks loose and lays waste to Bikini Bottom.

In one moment, while the town is burning, SpongeBob exclaims heartily “We did it Patrick! We saved the city!”.

Screenshots of the scene started to be used as a meme online in 2013, when a captioned screenshot was uploaded to Twitter on June 6^th.

In 2015, the format would see widespread use on MemeGenerator, appearing on sites like Reddit, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Starting in December, 2015, the meme would appear in YouTube remixes and parodies as well.
