Origin
What's the origin of Cottagecore?
While “cottagecore” only became the name for this aesthetic in 2018, similar themed aesthetics and ideals have been around for longer.
According to Wikipedia, the 19th century Arts and Crafts Movement, where the goal was to approach art, architecture and designs in folklore ways, could be one of “cottagecore’s” inspirations.
However, the now known “cottagecore” aesthetic was only recognized in early 2018 on Tumblr.
Spread & Usage
How did Cottagecore spread?
“Cottagecore” became more and more predominant over the years on various social media platforms. Most recently, it got popular on the video sharing app, TikTok and also on Instagram.
Even though the aesthetic spread onto a number of social media sites, the community was notably formed on Tumblr.
Despite the positive and subversive outlook on life of the “cottagecore” community, it has been criticized for romanticizing farming life and not appreciating the labour of real life farmers.
