The hashtag #instagramvsreality started gaining traction in 2015.
On November 28th, 2015, the Instagram page @celebface was launched, posting unflattering photos of models and actors.
The trend gained more and more traction over the years, with multiple pages dedicated to the theme on Instagram.
The concept of “Instagram vs. Reality” would also be explored in the subreddit r/Instagramreality, which was launched on November 1st, 2017.
It became viral in 2019, with comedy sketches, memes and various photos appearing on the web, related to the trend.
