What's the origin of Matchy-Matchy?

Although the exact origin of the expression is not known, it started appearing in fashion magazines around the mid-1980’s, with an early case found in print being linked to a 1985 issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

Since then, “Matchy-matchy” started to establish as a proper expression in fashion, reflecting upon the overly elaborate attempts at matching colors.

How did Matchy-Matchy spread?

Since the arrival of the internet, and with it, social media, people have had ample opportunities to Flex their wardrobes and their sense of fashion, resulting in countless photos of people in “Matchy-matchy” outfits.

In the 2010’s, the expression has achieved a new level of popularity, thanks to Instagram, where the trend grew exponentially, being a popular hashtag.
