Whale tail refers to the intentional or unintentional display of thongs, peeking out from under the pants of on the sides of specially tailored dresses.
Despite the fact that the burlesque dancers of the 1930’s also displayed their undergarments and thongs for the purpose of sexual allusion, the trend of the “Whale tail” started emerging in the fashion scene in the late 1990’s.
One of the first fashion events that displayed outfits with a “Whale tail” was Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring/Summer runway show of 1997.
“Whale tail” was quickly adopted by various other fashion designers of the late 1990’s, introducing the trend to the new millennium.
During the 2000’s, pop culture celebrities such as Britney Spears have spearheaded the fashion trend, making it appear in countless magazines, video clips, galas and fashion shows.
“Whale tail” was first defined on Urban Dictionary on November 10th, 2003, with several other entries following suit in the 2000’s.
Despite its popularity in the early years of the new millennium, the popularity of “Whale tail” started dying down in the 2010’s.
