The South Will Rise Again

Meaning

What does The South Will Rise Again mean?

The South Will Rise Again is a popular expression and rally call of people who identify as true patriots, living in the southern, ex-Confederate states of the US.

The phrase is used as a hopeful message, that the southern states may some day gain back their authority, integrity and power, as well as its original culture.

While those living in ex-Confederate states who were raised remembering “The Lost Cause” consider the expression meaningful, many who live outside of that area are puzzled by the actual meaning behind the sentence and its goals.

Origin

What's the origin of The South Will Rise Again?

While “The Lost Cause” was immediately picked up and propagated by the “United Daughters of the Confederacy” after the end of the Civil War, “The South Will Rise Again” didn’t become a popular catchphrase among Confederate revisionists until the 1940’s.

It became more prevalent as Black rights movements spread across the US in the second half of the 20th century, abolishing segregation and racial profiling.

This was largely frowned upon in the ex-Confederate states, where many people today still consider slavery to be a matter of state authority and liberty.
