Origin

What's the origin of CRPG?

Role playing games had a big history even before the computers, played similarly to boardgames.

They started to be adapted onto the digital platform around the 70’s and 80’s, with inspiration taken from the Lord of the Rings lore, as well as Dungeons and Dragons, the most famous role playing game.

Spread & Usage

How did CRPG spread?

With the improvement in computer technology, games have seen an upheaval in quality as well as popularity, with the golden age of CRPG games beginning in the end of the 80’s and start of the 90’s, with series like Might and Magic and Warcraft hitting stores.

With the arrival of the new millennium, roleplaying games started to experience a diversification, with subgenres emerging from CRPG.

Games like Runescape and World of Warcraft were the most notable installments of MMORPG or Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games.

Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls series is one present from the earliest days of role players and it is still going on, though their games have seen a decline in approval of old time fans.

CRPG games remain one of the most influential genres of computer gaming, and it looks like they will stay at this position, with the massive fan base, they possess.
