CYA is a common internet abbreviation for the phrase “see you” or “see ya” used in texting for saying goodbye.
Alternatively, it may stand as an acronym for the phrase “Cover Your Assets” (rear).
The exact origin of the acronym is not known, although it started appearing as far back as the 1980’s, still in the early days of the internet.
It later got more popular during the 1990’s, as more and more people would start using the internet for communication on message boards, forums and chatrooms.
“CYA” was first defined on Urban Dictionary in 2002, with many other entries to follow.
It got even more widespread in the 2000’s, as SMS technology and social media platforms were introduced to the lives of people.
