The phrase is used to express someone’s lack of care about a given subject in a profane but highly eloquent way.
To find the origin of the acronym, is no easy task, however, it was created sometime in the early 2000’s.
Due to the popularity of the phrase it abbreviates, as well as the rapid spread of the internet and the craze around text messaging, the acronym quickly caught on.
It appeared on Urban Dictionary as early as 2003 and several other definitions were written over the years, predominantly between 2004 and 2011, nicely showing us when it started to go viral.
As of January 27th, 2021, “dgaf” can be encountered in various contexts through various mediums, most of which are text messages or social media posts, although it is sometimes used in real life conversations as well.
