OML refers to the abbreviation of the phrase “Oh My Lord” a frequent exclamation at times of great surprise and distress.
It may also refer to the popular hashtag of the Linkin Park song “One More Light”, however, it mostly remains an underdog to the more popular OMG abbreviation.
Similar to many other abbreviations, “OML” started occurring on the internet in the 1990’s, when message boards, forums and chatrooms were a newly emerging phenomenon.
It spread farther in the early 2000’s, after the introduction of SMS technology on cell phones, and early social media sites.
“OML” would never become such a widely used and recognized abbreviation, as OMG, LOL or WYM, however it would still make occurrences on a variety of online platforms, including Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites.
An early definition on the abbreviation was uploaded to Urban Dictionary in 2006.
