What's the origin of Awaken, My Masters?
“Awaken, my masters” was first featured in the 64th chapter of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure manga, from Part 2: Battle Tendency, which was first published on March 28th, 1988.
In one of the scenes Wamuu and the rest of the Pillar Men are guarded by enemies, when the former awakens and kills their captors.
It is here he exclaims “Awaken, my masters” to which the rest of the Pillar Men awaken.

This moment has been a favorite among the JoJo fandom as well as regular Weebs and Otakus, being the topic for conversations in forums and image boards since 2008.
“Awaken, my masters” gained further popularity in January 2013, when the Episode 14 of Part 2’s anime adaptation was first aired, featuring the scene, along with “The Pillar Men Theme” which became a frequently used song in remixes, similar to the song heard in the JoJo to Be Continued meme.
Remixes and parodies were popping up rapidly on sites like YouTube and Tumblr, as well as fanart renderings on DeviantArt.
“Awaken, my masters” has been a popular trope on the web since 2013, and its popularity has steadily grown in the 2010’s, peaking in 2019.
