The meme is a reference to posts and similar four panel image macros which aim to guilt trip people into liking them.

The format became popular online, due to the many reiterations and modifications of the last panel, often appearing as a deep fried meme.

The first instance of a similar meme was posted to the r/terriblefacebookmemes subreddit by u/Transmanomatic in January 2016, depicting a small child with the captions, and an image of Jesus in the final panel.

This version would be later forgotten, replaced by a version, depicting an older boy on the panels, with almost identical captions.

One of the earliest version of the “what if you wanted to go to heaven but God said” meme was uploaded to Instagram by damnyworsnop on April 29th, 2017.
