Yo, Angelo

Meaning

What does Yo, Angelo mean?

Yo, Angelo is a memorable quote, originating from a JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure episode, so one may rightfully ask Is That a JoJo Reference? upon hearing the line.

Online, the scene has been turned into an exploitable image macro meme, used predominantly by Otakus and Weebs.

Yo Angelo!

Origin

What's the origin of Yo, Angelo?

“Yo, Angelo” first appeared in the manga edition of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, in chapter 274, published under the title “The Nijimura Brothers, Part 1” on July 5th, 1992.

The chapter features Josuke Higashikata and Koichi Hirose greeting a statue at some point with the line “Yo, Angleo” as it was containing Anjuro “Angelo” Katagiri, a defeated foe.

The scene was featured in the anime adaptation of the chapter as well, which premiered on April 15th, 2016.

Spread & Usage

How did Yo, Angelo spread?

The first image macro meme depicting the statue was uploaded to Tumblr on the day of the anime episode’s release, by user skyhigh-420.

In the following years, the meme had appeared sporadically on Tumblr as well as Reddit, however it was receiving moderate attention only.

This changed in 2019, when the “Yo, Angelo” meme’s popularity increased massively, with the appearance of image macros on the r/ShitpostCrusaders subreddit, often pairing the statue from the JoJo scene with images or emojis of the Moai monoliths of Easter Island.
