The Maltese company, producing bittersweet beverages was founded in 1952, marking the first time the term “Kinnie” was coined.

It would later appear in relation to the Otherkin movement in the 1990’s and 2000’s, although these cases are rare up to this date.

The term was first defined as the name of the soft drink brand on Urban Dictionary in 2015.

On March 22nd, 2018, the Otherkin regard of “kinnie” was defined on Urban Dictionary by the user named babyrin.

Starting in 2020, the phrase would start seeing more frequent use among otaku communities, who expressed their overwhelming sympathy toward their favourite characters by calling themselves their “kinnie”.

This use has led to numerous definitions being uploaded to Urban Dictionary by various users.
