You cheated not only the game, but yourself is a reference to a viral tweet of @Fetusberry, criticizing James Davenport, a PC Gaming journalist, who used cheats to finish “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice”.

Online, the tweet is spread as a copypasta as a reaction to exploits and cheats both in video games and in real life.

You cheated not only the game, but yourself.

You didn’t grow.
You didn’t improve.
You took a shortcut and gained nothing.

You experienced a hollow victory.

“Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” was published by Activision on March 22^nd, 2019.

On April 5^th, 2019, PC Gamer published an article by James Davenport with the title “I Beat Sekiro’s Final Boss with Cheats and I Feel Fine”.

The article was shared by the Twitter account of PC Gamer on the same day.

Twitter user @Fetusberry reacted to said tweet by writing a small lecture, stating with the sentence “you cheated not only the game, but yourself”.

The tweet instantly gained popularity, both on twitter, and on other sites as a copypasta, frequently combined with screenshots and depictions of widely known videogame cheats.

The meme would be mostly seen on Twitter and Reddit.
