What does Smoochie mean?

Originally, Smoochie is a diminutive version of the word Smooch, a popular onomatopoeic slang term for kissing.

Alternatively, “Smoochie” has been given a new meaning in street slang, popularized by Ice Spice, who defiend it as a “very confident person, who just know what they want.”

While the term has been around with its original sense, more and more people – especially Zoomers – are using it with its ghetto meaning, giving it a newfound badass vibe.

Example: “Actin’ a Smoochie when I’m off the liquor

What's the origin of Smoochie?

“Smoochie” originates from Smooch, which can be traced back to the 1930s United States.

Smooch has a longer history, as it can be derived from the dialectical word Smouch, which goes back as far as the 1570s, possibly as an onomatopoeic expression, mimicking the sound of a kiss.

“Smoochie” first started emerging in the 1940s, although at the time, it was written with a “y” instead of “ie.” Over time, both versions grew popular in the entire Anglosphere, and both can be encountered today.

One of the first notable uses of the term by Ice Spice can be traced to her song Imma Smoochie Like You Cannot Change Me,” although she uses the term in its original sense here.
