Buckle My Shoe

What does Buckle My Shoe mean?

Buckle My Shoe refers to a classic nursery rhyme, called “One, Two, Buckle My Shoe,” that was turned into a viral meme on TikTok, inspiring parodies and exploitable videos.

Songs about shoes have an important position in Anglo-Saxon culture – see Goody Two Shoesor G Fazos – and this banger was resurrected on TikTok thanks to some Lit lyric modifications, incorporating the Nike cult into the rhyme.

What's the origin of Buckle My Shoe?

The nursery rhyme “One, Two, Buckle My Shoe” has been around for a while, with the first accounts of its existence appear in Henry Carrington Bolton‘s “The Counting-Out Rhymes of Children“, where an old lady remembers it being used in the 1780s.

The first documentation of the nursery rhyme appears in the 1805 Songs for the Nursery,” published in London.

Since then, the rhyme has been used by mothers and nurses, however, its newfound popularity can be tied to TikTok in April 2023.

Spread & Usage

How did Buckle My Shoe spread?

The “Buckle My Shoe” meme was started by TikTok user @edmondx, who shared a video on April 15th, 2023, where he boasts a makeshift buckled Nike, while singing a modified version of the nursery rhyme.

The video instantly caught the attention of viewers and became a meme on TikTok, inspiring countless remixes and mashups with the original sound.

Later, other videos started to emerge, where people react to fly kicks by singing some hardcore melodies. These TikToks also began spreading to other platforms in mid 2023, including sites like YouTube, Twitter and Instagram.
